English ACCESS Microscholarship Program

The English ACCESS Microscholarship Program funded by the U.S. Department of State and managed by CCE Indonesia is designed to make the study of English accessible to intelligent Indonesian adolescents from families of low socio-economic status. The selected students are those of 15 to 18 year-old freshmen and sophomores of senior high and vocational schools who have strong desire to learn English and commitment to completely undergo the two-year program. The students will be provided with books, dictionaries, notes, stationery and transportation reimbursement."I am proud to see these avid young people entrusted an open door to unlock their potentials to attain better future for themselves and their communities," said Anita Chandra, one of the English teachers for ACCESS program in Jakarta.
Two equally-divided and gender-balanced groups of 220 students have been meticulously selected to participate in this program. Theresia Andriani as the Access program manager mentioned the selection criteria including academic performance, letters of recommendation displaying financial need, answers to essay questions and interviews with members of the review committee. Further she said, “Above all we selected highly motivated and committed students.” The first group of 110 students is from 16 different schools in Jakarta undergoing the training in Menteng, Central Jakarta. The other group of 110 students is from 6 different schools in Madura undergoing the classes in Bangkalan, Madura. Classes in both locations have simultaneously commenced on the 22nd of March 2010.
This two-year, 400-hour program consists of a pre-course orientation (3 hours), four semesters (22 weeks long and 100 hours) and enhancement activities. The general goal of the program is to enable the participants to develop fluency and communication strategies in English through a series of meaningful, interactive, contextual, and curriculum-based learning processes. The program is designed to allow the students to develop three major areas, necessary for their future development. Firstly, they are expected to acquire the target language progressively, accurately, and significantly allowing them to develop the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Secondly, as the students are exposed with Western cultures through printed and audiovisual learning sources and direct interactions with American guest speakers, they are expected to be open-minded and have good understanding of cultures different from their own. Thirdly, this prestigious achievement of a foreign-funded scholarship provides attractive addition to their portfolios essential for better future career.
