Heartland International and CCE Indonesia Strenghtening Secondary Education in Indonesia: Program for School Administrators and Community Leaders

CLP

Heartland International, in partnership with the Center for Civic Education/Indonesia, will  implement a three-week educational training program focusing on strengthening private and community-based secondary education in Indonesia. Funded by the U.S. Embassy, this program will complement other Embassy initiatives designed to improve the quality of teaching and learning in primary and junior secondary public and private schools, and promote greater community involvement.

Program Goals and Objectives

The main goals of the program are to strengthen secondary school education in Indonesia, support tolerance in a diverse, democratic society and allow Indonesians and Americans to share their views on the role of the school in the community and the community in the school.

From these goals, specific objectives have been identified for this training:

  • Participants will gain a comprehensive introduction to the U.S. education system through presentations and meetings with education experts and site visits to classrooms, schools and NGOs.  Innovative schools and civic education programs will be highlighted in order to gain a clearer understanding of how to develop critical-thinking skills and promote democratic values in students.

  • Participants will develop and enhance their leadership skills in order to strengthen their schools and generate increased community support and resources.

  • Program participants will participate in exercises and activities designed to promote diversity, tolerance, and respect in schools and the community which can be implemented at home with their students.

CLP

  • Individual Action Plans will be developed by the participants that will enable them to implement realistic and doable new programs in their schools and communities.  Action Plans might focus on introducing a community service project; enhancing or establishing a student government; or revising the civic education curriculum.
  • Through the homestay portion of the program, participants will experience American culture and lifestyle first hand, exchange ideas and traditions with homestay hosts, and create personal linkages for ongoing interaction.  Participants will also have opportunities to visit significant sites and museums in Chicago, Mississippi and Alabama that will provide insight into American culture and history.
