INDONESIA AMERICA SOCCER EXCHANGE PROGRAM
Administered by CCE Indonesia in cooperation with International Center
and Funded by The U.S Department of State - Sport United Program

The Indonesian American Soccer Exchange (IASE) program will build upon the existing relationships and further improve understanding between the people of Indonesia and the United States through the medium of youth sports. To actively support the development of youth and women’s sports in Indonesia and help strengthen understanding and respect for the people of the United States and Indonesia, the International Center and the Center for Civic Education Indonesia have designed a comprehensive exchange program using soccer as the medium for building these relationships and understanding between the two countries.
This program will focus on two primary groups: female athletes and coaches of these young players. Disabled athletes and their coaches will be also incorporated in overall programming and all aspects of the activities. The program has the following specific objectives:
- Organize soccer-related sporting activities in Indonesia and the United States that will provide opportunities and empower female Indonesian youth, including disabled athletes; improve coaches’ playing and coaching skills; and helping athletes and coaches acquire related life-skills.
- Teach and share positive examples with these athletes and coaches and provide leadership, educational, and injury prevention programming that will further empower, encourage and prepare young women for leadership roles in Indonesian communities.
- Develop and implement related cultural and social activities and events that will contribute to improved understanding and the development of positive relations between the youth and administrators of Indonesia and the youth and administrators in the United States.
The Indonesian-American Soccer Experience: Women in Sports Exchange Program will consist of components held in Indonesia and the United States. The program directly addresses multiple themes of this funding opportunity, including “Training Sports Coaches”, “Youth Sports Management Exchange” and “Youth with Disabilities.”
Component 1: Sports and Fellowship in Indonesia
On January 2011 several one-day soccer training and coaching clinics will be held in the cities of Jakarta, Pontianak – West Kalimantan and Surabaya – East Java. The Center for Civic Education Indonesia (CCE)) will work with International Center to invite qualified players and coaches to these clinics. Participants will include 250-300 female youth, ages 12-20, and their existing coaches. Players and coaches with disabilities will be encouraged to join. American licensed coaches and top level athletes, will travel to Indonesia to lead clinics for the players and educate coaches about successful American tactics and management of young women. The objective is to reach a large number of youth female athletes in targeted locations within Indonesia. Simultaneously, a group of Indonesian coaches and potential new coaches will participate in a training program for coaching. This coaching program will include ‘off-the-field’ teaching, technical and tactical manuals, information relating to training session management and injury prevention guidelines, plus opportunities to coach at the clinics alongside U.S. coaches. In addition to the pure sports elements described above, visiting coaches and players will dedicate time every day to discuss issues related to ‘sports and life.’
Component 2: Sports and Fellowship in the United States
The second component, to be held on June 2011, includes a ten day visit to the United States (Oregon and San Francisco) for a smaller, selected group of coaches and athletes. The program will include visiting two U.S. cities, Portland, Oregon, and San Francisco, California, to participate in organized soccer training sessions and friendly games with American youth, and engage in social and cultural activities. These visits will allow players and coaches to experience an American soccer environment and a chance to develop friendships with top level athletes, coaches, and fellow age- and or ability-level teams as well as provide opportunities to participate in social and cultural activities. The group will have the opportunity to participate in social and cultural events, plus women empowering activities. The participants` recruitment for the coaching clinics is open.
