Personal Perspective (Reni–Program Coordinator CCE Indonesia)

People say that Yogyakarta is known for its hospitality and friendliness. Different from people from other parts of Indonesia (Sumatra for example), people in Yogyakarta are also famous for being calm and patient. They tend to obey the rules. As someone who is of Yogyakarta descent (Both of my parents come from small villages in rural Yogyakarta), I proud of these stereotypes. We were taught to have such behavior in our daily life. These positive preconceptions of Yogya proved particularly true during our latest training with Muhammadiyah in Yogyakarta.

CCE Indonesia tried to conduct collaboration in holding a Project Citizen training with Muhammadiyah Education Board in Yogyakarta after having good cooperation with Muhammadiyah Education Board in Jakarta, a year ago. Yogyakarta was one the first sites for CCE to establish a program. It was the city where our first national Training of Trainers was held in 2002. It was also the city where a terrible disaster happened a couple of months ago. Therefore, CCE tried to equip the teachers in the disaster zone with an innovative method in teaching civic education so that the students will find an active and fun learning environment. CCE also invited 6 junior high school teachers from Darul Ulum foundation – an Islamic institution – in Jombang, East Java to join the training. They are the potential team for the much-discussed project citizen film-making in 2007.

Discussion session

We have three of the best trainers in Yogyakarta who tried to deliver the information and the knowledge enthusiastically. The participants paid strict attention during the training. They asked interesting questions such as how to fit this method with the civic curriculum that's been established by the National Education Department, what the advantages and disadvantages of this method are; and how to use simple materials in order to make good displays. The three problems that were discussed by the participants were the student fighting near the school area, the problems of pre-marital sex among the teenagers in Yogyakarta and the student behavior problems in school (such as smoking at school area).

The participants present their project

The participants experienced so much fun during the training. They had even made a timeline for implementing the project over the next couple months. CCE will monitor the implementation by visiting some schools and meeting the students in the classroom. The teachers showed full commitment to the program. CCE gave a box of Kami Bangsa Indonesia books – containing 50 books – to each school. Some of the teachers came from a very far area, some around 1.5 hours from the training site. Still they - both female and male – were so happy to bring the boxes on the backs of their motorcycles tied by a rope!

Some participants are discussing the problems for their project

The Muhammadiyah Education board was also very cooperative. They see that the teachers will have useful experience by attending the training. For this training CCE and Muhammadiyah Education board only chose 31 schools. But then, Muhammadiyah asked the trainers to select the best participants to be trainers for their next training since there are 39 more junior schools under Muhammadiyah Education Board. They'd love to see project citizen in every Muhammadiyah schools in Yogyakarta.
