Personal Perspective (Reni–Program Coordinator CCE Indonesia)

Kendari is the capital of Southeast Sulawesi. It is not the first time for CCE to work in the city. Three students and one teacher from Kendari were sent to USA for Indonesian Youth Leadership Program (IYLP) sponsored by the US Department of State and managed by CCE Indonesia and Legacy International in July 2006.

The training was held with the cooperation of Education Faculty of Haluoleo University in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi. The Dean of the faculty who opened the training was really happy to work with CCE since it would also benefit the faculty. 10 students teacher of the faculty were also joined the training and he thought that the students would be great trainers for other teachers in the province someday.

Participants enjoying the activities

Eagerness and curiosity were shown by the participants during the training. The games that were given by the trainers in the training inspired the participants. They try to implement the games during the learning and teaching process in the classrooms so that the students will find a condusive learning condition.

One participant asking questions during the training

A problem arouse when the participants listed the topics that will be discussed in the group. They wrote down topics that were very general such as the low quality of education, polygamy in Indonesia and the scarcity of gasoline. But then the trainers explained that they should try to set their mind as middle-school students so that they can think about problems which were found in their community, which were not too broad and were still in the capacity to be solved.

At the end, the participants can absorb all the information given not only by the trainers but also by the speakers who talked about the public policy making. CCE and Haluoleo University especially its faculty of education were satisfied with the training and tried to propose another training in the future.
