  • Introduction

The Majelis Pendidkan Katolik (MPK) or the Catholic Education Board is the institution under the Central (Jakarta, Tangerang, Bekasi) Catholic Church which is responsible for improving and developing education in all catholic schools in the Jakarta Special District. In 2006, they are responsible for coordinating education in over 100 elementary schools, 100 junior high schools, 53 Senior high schools and 19 vocational schools which are located in Jakarta, Tangerang and Bekasi. After having several meetings with the representatives of MPK, CCEI and MPK agreed to cooperate in having training for their civic education teachers in the Junior High schools.

  • Place & Time

The training was held on February 23 -34, 2006 and took place at Wisma Samadi, Jalan Dermaga, Klender, East Jakarta. Wisma Samadi is the place where Catholic educators gather to have religious training or seminars. The place is nice since it has many parks and one feels far from the crowded and polluted city of Jakarta.

  • Trainers

The trainers for this training are:

    • Drs. Komaruddin, M.Si (Lecturer at Jakarta State University)
    • Drs. Adelina Hasyim, M.Pd (Lecturer at Lampung State University)
    • Drs. Deni Setiawan, M.Si (Lecturer at Medan State University)
    • Irmina Reniarti, SpD. CCE Staff
    • William Ryan, In-country Director, CCE Indonesia

  • Topics of the Problems

The participants were divide into 4 groups, each of which consists of 17 – 19 people.  The problems that were discussed are:

    • Students’ Fighting
    •  Malnutrition of children in the school community.
    • Freedom of worship
    • Child Abouse(Done  by parents to some of their friends at school)
  • Conclusion

From the beginning, MPK said that so far no one has paid much attention to civic education and its teachers. That’s why they are so glad that there is an organization which focuses on civic education development. They also feel that for many teachers and the students, civic education can be a most boring subject. Thus, they’re pleased to be trained in a new and attractive method for teaching this subject.
The participants listened attentively to all materials given by the trainers during the training. It was proven by their discipline in coming to the meeting room on time or even earlier either after they had breakfast, coffee breaks, lunch or dinner. They were also enthusiastic in implementing upon their return to their students.
At the end, participants and MPK asked CCE to visit and monitor the implement of the program in their schools and they’ve even asked CCEI to assist in holding a competition in 4 – 5 months.
Overall, the training went exceedingly well and this was due to good cooperation between the staffs from CCE and MPK.
