  2. This training had brought me and other participants together and made us talk to each other, things that seldom happen after the riot ends (Christian EM Langgari, SMP Kristen 1 Tentena)
  3. I found that KBI program was a very good program for me and my students; the method was fun! (Agustina Tampai, SMPN 1 Tentena, Tentena)

II. Personal Perspective  (Acih Sari, CCEI Program Coordinator)

Poso is located 200 km away from Palu, the capital province of Central Sulawesi. On 16 January 2008, the KBI training was opened by welcome speech from the rector of Sintuwu Maroso University. The participants, 40 civic education teachers from 21 junior high schools, were divided into 8 groups that are based on the differences in gender, religion and type of school to make the training effective. When the conflict happened in Poso and caused more than 2.000 people killed and hundreds houses burned, two biggest communities in Poso, Moslem and Christian community were separated by location and suspicious feeling to each other. Many Christian people live in Tentena, a small city 1,5 hours from Poso, while the Moslem community lives in Poso peacefully together with a transmigrant Hindu community.

The three days training ran successfully. The participants did many discussions among themselves as a part of training activities and also with local trainers and I as the program coordinator. Two selected problems that became the participants studied project were fight between students and the annual increase of national exam standard points. After completing the portfolios, the participants presented their portfolios in a showcase which gave them the real experience on how to present a portfolio. In order to gather information about the two problems, the participants interviewed a member of People Representatives Assembly of Poso and a community leader. They also visited a local police office and went to the campus library to find more information.

Getting information in Police Station

The training was ended on 18 January 2008 and hopefully met the goals of the training: of being a civic education instructional program that promotes competent and responsible participation in government. The 40 participants hoped to teach their students to be active citizens and to be able to solve problems in the community where they belong, so conflict and violation won’t happen again in the future.

Discussing the porto folio with Jeffrey Loree - Political and Economic Officer of U.S. Congen, Surabaya

The closing ceremony was attended by Jeffrey Loree, a political and economic officer of U.S. Consul General from Surabaya, who seemed enjoyed talking with the participants about their experience joining the KBI training and about how the situation was in Poso. In conclusion, the training in Poso was a great success. They were enthusiastic during the training and very active in responding and asking many questions to the trainers and CCEI staffs. Now the teachers are implementing the KBI program at their classrooms and the students start to do their class project and solve problems that they have in their school environment and community. The result of the class projects will be presented in April or May in the local showcase in Poso.
