Training of Civic Education Program
Project Citizen: KAMI BANGSA INDONESIA
A Professional Development for Civic Education Teachers
in Conflict and Post Conflict Areas

Serang - Banten, 19-21 August 2008

This workshop was administrated by the CCE Indonesia and cooperation with Department of Religion and Education Office of Kabupaten Serang and funded by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor

I. Facts

  1. 37 civic teachers from 17 state schools and 20 private schools were participated in the training.  
  2. Serang – Banten is a concern area for interfaith conflict. Some radical movements were identified there.

II.   Personal Perspective (Acih Sari, Program Coordinator)


There were 37 participants from 17 state and 20 private schools participated in the civic teachers professional development training of Project Citizen (Kami Bangsa Indonesia) in Serang, Banten.Banten is one of the conflict concern area in Indonesia. There are some radical religious movement identified here. The tendentious of interfaith conflict are also a concern. The cooperation with Department of Religion and Education Office of Kabupaten Serang really supported the process of preparation and the implementation of the Kami Bangsa Indonesia curriculum at the participated schools.

At the beginning of the training, the participants still need to adjust with the materials and also with other participants. After an ice breaker, all participants were starting to engage to one another. The training achieved a great success and motivated most participants to join the showcase which will be conducted after the schools monitoring.

The public policy problems that became the studied cases were the lack of teaching and learning facilities at schools and the increase of the drop out students in Kabupaten Serang. In collecting information for the cases, the participants were divided in groups and went to Education Office of Kabupaten Serang and the city library.

At the end of the training, all participants seemed satisfy to get all KBI materials and enthusiastic to implement the program at their schools. The participants of the training also think that the learning and teaching strategies which are given during the training were very usefull to have effective and active learning hours.
