Praktik Belajar Kewarganegaraan – Kami Bangsa Indonesia
(Project Citizen) Training in Lubuk Linggau, South Sumatera,

9 – 11 March 2006

Highlights of this training:

  • Low Cost.  This training was conducted with the full support of the local Education Department.  They provided facilities, meals, accomodations, teacher time and logisitics.  CCE funded books and trainer’s costs only.
  • High Impact.  Schools in locations like Lubuk Linggau do not get much attention from outside organizations and the government.  Training in innovative instructional strategies is something new to them, the program is likely to be self-sustaining into the indefinite future.
  • Community Influence.  The larger school community – parents, students, teachers and neighbors were aware of this special training (see news art. below).   When actual classroom instruction takes place shortly,  students are likely to be very well recieved in the active learning aspects of the program.
  • Numbers.  It is likely that in the first six months of the program more than 1500 students will recieve instuction.  A three year projection could see up to 5000 students instructed. (note: a substantial number in a smaller community)

  • Introduction

This KBI Training was held in remote Lubuk Linggau, South Sumatra.

Lubuk Linggau is the capital city of Musi Rawas Regency. The area is 21.513 km2 wide and the population is about 180.000. The city, which is 350 km in the west of Palembang (or about 10 hours driving by a car and 5 hours driving from Bengkulu), is a transit city. Some people say that Lubuk Linggau is the city that never sleeps because so many cars, buses, and trucks pass through from morning to night.
Last year CCE Indonesia with its coordinator from Lampung held KBI training in Curup, Bengkulu (South West Sumatra).  Local Education officers and some Junior High Schools civic teachers from this city who heard about this training, with its new method in teaching civic education, were interested in knowing more. They contacted the CCEI coordinator in Lampung and asked whether they can have similar training. After some discussions, it was agreed that 22 civic teachers and 11 principals would be trained on March 9 -11, 2006. The location of the training was in the hall of National Middle School # 8,  Lubuk Linggau.

VI. Conclusion

Lubuk Linggau is a difficult place to work.  It is on a highway crossroads, yet still very isolated.  It is one of the few areas in Indonesia where one could still observe tigers and elephants in the wild!  Although the trainers had to drive12 hours from Lampung to reach the training site, they were happy to do it because of the enthusiasm of the participants. The participants joined the training attentively and they were eager to return to the classroom and begin instruction!
