The Tanonaka International Journalist Scholarship

(TIJS)

Students with an interest in becoming international journalists may apply for a newly-created scholarship.  “The Tanonaka International Journalist Scholarship” will be given to a deserving student who meets program criteria and demonstrates need.  An initial Rp. 5,000,000 cash award will be given, followed by monthly stipends of Rp. 1,000,000.

The scholarship is being provided by Dalton Tanonaka, the co-anchor of Metro TV's groundbreaking weekly English-language program “Indonesia Now.”  Tanonaka joined Metro TV in June 2006, having previously worked for CNN International, CNBC Asia and NHK in Tokyo.  He is also a columnist for the Jakarta Post Weekender Magazine.

“I want to help the next generation of journalists in this country get the education to enter the profession,” said Tanonaka, who established a similar scholarship in the United States.  “And I want them to know that those of us already in the business care.”

The scholarship was established in memory of Tanonaka's father, Thomas, who died in November 2006.

Requirements:

  • Student from Lombok Island
  • Graduate from Senior High School in the year 2007
  • Eager to continue study on communication science major, specifically journalistic
  • Demonstrated leadership skill or indication of leadership potential
  • good academic standing and social skills
  • communicative; demonstrates understanding of the importance of flexibility
  • Keen on writing
  • Plan to work on journalistic field such as being journalists or reporter
  • Involve actively in school and community organization

How do I apply?

  • Complete an application form and submit it to the Center for Civic Education, Gedung Jiwasraya, Lantai2, Jalan Gondangdia Lama No. 41- Menteng Jakarta Pusat, 10350 by 25 June 2007. Take special care in answering the essay questions.
  • Submit two letters of recommendation along with the application (also by 25 June 2007 ). Either two from a senior teacher or school official or one from a senior teacher or school official and one from a community leader who knows your experience in working within the society.
  • CCE will contact the applicants selected for interviews based on the criteria above, as demonstrated in the application. Individual interviews will take place in Lombok in the month of July.
  • A team of judges will make a list of candidates based on rank.
  • This scholarship will be given to one selected student when the student is able to show his or her acceptance in a university majoring in communication science and willing to take journalistic major in third semester. Otherwise, the scholarship will be given to another selected candidate.

The selected candidates will be announced by CCE about one week after the interview date.
