2006 is the third year for the Indonesia Youth Leadership Program! This year’s participants have been selected from pools of excellent nominees in Aceh, North Sumatra, Lampung, Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Lombok and Southeast Sulawesi (Kendari).

What’s Up? The Indonesia Youth Leadership Program gives over 30 students from all across Indonesia a chance to spend a month in the America, meet real American people (not just like on TV!), share their Indonesian culture, and to study leadership and civic education. Students are selected from provinces across Indonesia and reflect the diversity that is Indonesia in their ethnic backgrounds, races and religions.
Why? Many Americans don’t know much about Indonesia and its people. Many Indonesians only know America from TV. This program gives Indonesians and Americans an opportunity to meet one another, learn about each others cultures and communities and learn from one another. It is a program intended to raise understanding and friendship between Indonesia and America.

Who? Students are selected from top nominees in schools across Indonesia. They are some of Indonesia’s best and brightest students and are in the first and second years of SMA (High School). Students come from Islamic, Catholic, Protestant, Hindu, Public and Private schools.
How? The U.S. program is managed by Legacy International (http://www.legacyintl.org/). Legacy is dedicated to strengthening civil society – linking cultures and providing tools for individuals and organizations to build a better tomorrow today. The Center for Civic Education Indonesia does all Indonesian recruitment, selection and management.
The IYLP is totally FREE to participants and is completely sponsored by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the U.S. Embassy, Jakarta.
Where? Students come from provinces across Indonesia. In the United States, students will spend one month at the beautiful campus of Randolph Macon Woman’s College (http://www.rmwc.edu/ ) in Southern Virginia and a week at the campus of the American University in Washington D.C. (http://www.american.edu ).

When? Students for this year’s program have already been selected and will meet in Jakarta in June to meet one another, engage in a pre-departure orientation and then head onto the United States.
